Do I need an account to use First Mate?
You can plan trips right in the app. An account lets your trips and settings follow you across your phone and PC, so you pick up on one device right where you left off on another.
Does it work without signal?
Yes. First Mate is built to work offline. The planning and checklists run entirely on your device, so you're covered out on the water.
What devices does it run on?
An Android phone app and a Windows PC app right now, with an iPhone version planned. One login works across all of them.
Is my data private?
Your trips live on your device, and they sync to your account only so your own devices stay in step. Passwords are always hashed and salted, never stored in plain text.
How much does it cost?
The app is free to use, with a one-time $10 upgrade that unlocks the shopping list, watch schedule, and offline map trip log. Buy it once and it's yours, with no subscription.
First Mate, in your language
Today First Mate is English-only, and more languages are planned. But a sailing planner carries safety-critical wording, like fuel warnings and go / no-go checks, and that's the one place we won't trust a machine to get it right. We'd rather have those parts translated by people who actually sail and speak the language.
Want to help? If you speak another language, especially if you sail in it, we'd love a hand translating the important parts, above all the safety wording. Send us the key phrases in your language and we'll credit you. Native speakers especially welcome, and every safety phrase gets checked by a second speaker before it ships.

First Mate is a planning aid, not a safety authority. It helps you estimate provisions and organize your trip. It does not replace proper seamanship, official charts, weather forecasts, marine authorities, or your own judgment. You are always responsible for the safety of your vessel, your crew, and yourself.
Not official guidance
First Mate is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or a substitute for the U.S. Coast Guard, any coast guard or maritime authority, or any official safety program. Its checklists, calculators (water, fuel, provisions), watch schedules, and any safety-related content are general aids only. They are not certified advice and may not reflect the rules, conditions, or equipment requirements that apply to your vessel, your waters, or your voyage.
Verify everything yourself
Before any trip, independently verify your requirements and readiness, including but not limited to: required and properly-maintained safety equipment (life jackets/PFDs, flares, EPIRB, fire extinguishers, radio, etc.), fuel and water margins for your specific vessel and conditions, weather and sea state, navigation and charts, float-plan filing, and local, state, federal, and international regulations. Do not rely on First Mate's numbers or checklists as your sole source for any safety-critical decision.
Estimates only
All calculations are estimates based on the information you enter and simplified assumptions. Real consumption and conditions vary. Always carry a safe margin beyond any figure the app produces, and never set out under-provisioned because the app suggested a value.
Emergencies
First Mate is not an emergency, distress, or communication tool and may not work when you need it most. In an emergency, contact the Coast Guard or local emergency services directly by radio or phone.

Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") are an agreement between you and UFT Holdings LLC ("we," "us," "First Mate") governing your use of the First Mate apps and website (the "Service"). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
1. Who can use First Mate
You must be at least 18 years old, or the age of legal majority where you live, to create an account or use the Service. By using it, you confirm that you meet this requirement. The Service is intended for adults and is not directed to children.
2. What First Mate is
First Mate is a recreational trip-planning aid for overnight sailing: provisioning and fuel/water calculators, checklists, watch schedules, and trip logs. It is a convenience tool only. Please read the Safety Disclaimer, which is part of these Terms. You remain solely responsible for the safety of your vessel and crew and for complying with all applicable maritime laws.
3. Your account
You are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for activity under your account. Provide accurate information, and let us know if you believe your account has been compromised. We store your password only as a salted hash, never in plain text.
4. Acceptable use
You agree not to misuse the Service. For example, don't attempt to break, overload, reverse-engineer, or gain unauthorized access to it or others' accounts, don't use it unlawfully, and don't rely on it as a safety-critical or emergency system. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms or that we reasonably believe create risk to others or the Service.
5. Your content
Trip data you create is yours. When you are signed in, First Mate can sync it to your account so it appears on your other devices. We store it only to sync it back to you, we never sell it, and you can delete it at any time by deleting the trips or your account.
6. Pricing & refunds
First Mate is a one-time purchase. Buy it once and it's yours, tied to your account across your devices. There is no subscription, and the price is shown to you before you buy.
First Mate is a one-time $10 purchase and all sales are final, except where a refund is required by law. Purchases made through an app store are handled under that store's own refund process.
7. Disclaimers
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or uninterrupted availability, to the fullest extent permitted by law. We do not warrant that any calculation, checklist, or other output is accurate, complete, or suitable for your situation.
8. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss, injury, damage to property or vessel, or death, arising out of or related to your use of (or inability to use) the Service, including reliance on its estimates or checklists. Nothing in these Terms limits any liability that cannot be limited under applicable law, and these Terms do not affect mandatory consumer-protection rights you may have where you live.
9. Changes
We may update these Terms as the product develops. The current version is always posted here, with its effective date. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised Terms.

Privacy Policy
Effective date: at launch
This policy explains what information First Mate (UFT Holdings LLC) collects, why, and what choices you have.
What we collect
- Account info: your email address and a salted, hashed version of your password. We never store your password in plain text.
- Trip data: the trips, crew, provisioning, and checklist information you create. This lives on your device, and when you are signed in it also syncs to your account so your own devices stay in step.
- Basic technical data: standard information needed to operate the Service securely, for example records of login attempts used to protect against password-guessing.
Location data
When you start recording a trip, First Mate collects your device's precise location (GPS) to log the route you travel. So it can capture your full route even while your phone is locked or the app is in the background, tracking runs as a foreground service with an ongoing notification while you are recording, and it stops when you end the trip or turn tracking off. Your recorded track is stored on your device and, if you are signed in and enable sync, is saved to your account so you can view it on your other devices. First Mate does not sell your location data or share it with third parties, and location is only collected while you have trip recording turned on.
What we don't do
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not show ads. We do not upload your trip data automatically.
Trip sync
When you are signed in, your trips sync to your account so they appear on your other devices. Your trip data is stored only for that purpose, and you can remove it at any time by deleting the trips or your account.
How we use information
We use your information to provide the Service: to sign you in, keep your account secure, and (if you enable it) sync your data. We use security-related data only to protect accounts and the Service.
Your choices & rights
You can change your email or password, sign out of all devices, and permanently delete your account at any time from your account settings. Deleting your account removes your account record from our systems. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights over your data; contact us to exercise them.
Children
First Mate is intended for adults (18+). It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
Data retention & security
We keep account information for as long as your account exists. Passwords are salted and hashed; where the Service later runs on a server, we take reasonable measures to protect your information. No system is perfectly secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security.
